The Santa Clara County Main Jail Complex is operated by the County of Santa Clara Office of the Sheriff, Custody Bureau. It is a county jail, not a state prison, and it is used for booking, intake, pretrial detention, court-related custody, higher-security housing, and specialized medical or mental-health housing. County materials describe Main Jail North as including intake booking, a medical infirmary, special housing, and an acute mental-health unit.

The official facility page says the Main Jail receives and books about 30,000 people each year. The Sheriff page says the Santa Clara County Main Jail Complex is designed to house up to 1,084 inmates. That is a facility capacity figure, not the same as the full Santa Clara County jail system capacity. The broader county jail system includes Main Jail and the Elmwood facilities in Milpitas, and county material references a BSCC-rated system capacity of 3,932 beds.

Population counts vary by source and date. The 2024 Sheriff PREA Annual Report listed a Main Jail year-end count of 695 on December 31, 2024. A Sheriff daily jail population PDF dated Sunday, January 25, 2026 at 5:00 a.m. listed Main Jail at 290 while the county jail system total was 2,808. Those figures should not be merged into one claim because one is a year-end report and the other is a point-in-time daily count.

Main Jail Address and Contact

Main Jail Visiting Rules

Main Jail visits use the county visitation hub and Online Visiting Registration. The Sheriff posted that a new OVR platform launched Wednesday, February 18, 2026, and visitors must re-register to schedule new visits. Main Jail approval may take up to seven business days. Adults must use current government photo ID and present the same ID used for registration.

Official Main Jail rules list two 60-minute visits per week, up to two adults, with 30-minute visit portions per adult. Visitors must check in 30 minutes early, pass through a metal detector, and keep phones and recording-capable devices out of the visiting area. Visits may be cancelled for emergencies, discipline, court conflicts, or housing moves.

Main Jail Mail and Money

Money for Santa Clara County Main Jail Complex inmates can be deposited through the Sheriff commissary options. The custody commissary page lists lobby kiosks, TouchPay phone deposits, online TouchPay deposits, mailed cashier's checks or money orders, and iCare gift packs. Money orders for commissary are payable to Santa Clara County Department of Correction, which is different from the payee used for bail.

The inmate rulebook explains that account funds may be used for commissary, phone calls, self-cash bail, and some withdrawals. Housing-unit phones are outgoing only and available during dayroom time. Tablets may also be used for calls. Personal calls are limited to 15 minutes, and calls may be monitored, recorded, screened, and shared with law enforcement.

Main Jail Booking Intake

Main Jail is the central facility for many Santa Clara County arrest bookings. Administrative booking documents the arrest, enters information into a database used by law enforcement and related agencies, and creates the custody record that supports public booking information. A booking may include identification, fingerprints, a booking photograph, classification review, and housing assignment.

After booking, a person may be cited and released, post bail, receive own recognizance release, or stay in custody for arraignment. Bail can be posted between 5:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m. by cash, bank cashier's check, money order, or bail bond, but the Sheriff's Office states that it cannot refer people to bail bond agencies. Holds, warrants, or no-bail conditions can block ordinary release even when a bail amount appears.

Direct-supervision units place a trained deputy in the housing area, while indirect-supervision areas use a different layout and staffing model.
